Hill Country Report: Netherlands

12.06.2009: The Netherlands are part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and are also called Holland, while their people are called the Dutch. Located in Northwestern Europe, the Netherlands are bordered by the North Sea, by Belgium and by Germany. The capital is Amsterdam and the government is based in Den Haag. With Belgium and Luxembourg it forms the economic union Benelux.
The Netherlands are a densely populated country with about 16.5 million people living on 41,526 square kilometres of low-lying country, with a little less than 30% of its area and 60% of its population located below sea level. Significant areas have been gained through land reclamation and preserved through an elaborate system of polders and dikes. Most of the country is flat, with the exception of foothills of the Ardennes in the Southeast and several low-hill ranges in the central parts.
The financial crisis is causing a drop in economic activity in the Netherlands that has not occurred since the early 1980s. While the economic growth was still 3.5% in 2007, and 2% in 2008, the national planning agency CPB expects a decrease of the economic performance of 3.5% for 2009. Read more >>
